Sometimes, the wisest way to carry cash and valuables is not carrying it at all. Normally, hotel in-room safes are pretty secure, but if you have an immense amount of cash or a particularly special item you’re worried about, check if the hotel offers a safe-deposit box.

When using a hotel lockbox, remember to retrieve your stuff before leaving. In most cases, the rush to pack up and hit the road makes you forget what you can’t see until you’re far away and thus the panic begins. Leave flashy notes on your suitcase if you’re a forgetful person.
