In the GPI’s list of the most dangerous countries, we find that African and Middle Eastern countries top the list in 2016 while North African regions are less safe than they used to be.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been in a state of turmoil ever since Mr. Kabila, the president, decided to run for the presidency a third time, which transgresses the Constitution.

Congolese protested but soon were repressed by the government. In the absence of freedom of expression, associations and peaceful assemblies have been created, as stated by Amnesty International.

The Congolese army failed to protect civilians in the east against several armed attacks which resulted in a massive killing of innocent civilians.

The Central African Republic’s stability has been at stake and vulnerable ever since it got its independence in 1960. The country is home to one of the world’s poorest populations. When Muslims tried to take over power in a Christian dominated society conflicts began.

2014 was the year of a transitional government, which came in response to international pressure. This only intensified violence for months to come. Attempts to make the country transition from this turmoil are internationally supervised with a constitutional referendum.
